Referrals for Pros

May 17, 2026by @proangler

Experienced anglers understand that most things happen away from the spotlight. Fishing alone on the water or with a buddy, in the garage pouring lead into jig molds, or fine-tuning the prop on a boat before sunrise. These moments are where experience is earned, knowledge is acquired, and stories are created.

But if those stories and lessons are never shared, they eventually disappear.

Fishing knowledge lives through the mediums that allow anglers to share their experiences with others:

  • Images

  • Video (live and recorded)

  • Audio

  • Written content

  • Conversation and storytelling

One of the most overlooked aspects of content creation is not just how you share your story, but how people discover it. The ability to organize, promote, track, and surface content is just as important as creating it.

That is where the ProAngler Referral System comes in.

ProAngler Referral Links are designed to make fishing content easier to discover, share, and engage with. These customizable links allow creators to:

  • Direct visitors to specific content

  • Highlight products, sponsors, or featured elements

  • Customize visitor experiences

  • Track engagement and traffic analytics

  • Reward audiences for participation and interaction

In modern storytelling, creating engaging experiences around your content changes everything.

ProAngler is designed to help anglers do more than publish content. It helps them build discoverable, measurable, and rewarding experiences around the stories they tell.

ProAngler Referral System

The Referral Manager lets you create smart links that route followers from a single short URL to any destination on the ProAngler platform or to any other web address. Your profile, a plugin in your profile, a product page, a signup page, your sponsors page, a retailers product sale, or an external URL such as a traditional affiliate link.

Every link is tracked, every click is logged, and every link supports attribution so you can see exactly where your traffic is coming from and going to. And.. that allows you to customize the experience.

All referral links use the ProAngler redirect service:

    r4n.me/{your-handle}/{referral-slug}

Managing Your Referrals

Go to Referrals in your dashboard navigation to see all your referral links. From here you can:

  • See each referral's slug, target, status, and last updated date

  • Edit any field — changes save automatically

  • Toggle a referral active or inactive

  • Connect or disconnect products

  • Delete a referral

Referral Editor Fields

Field

Purpose

Referral Slug

The path used in your short link (r4n.me/{handle}/{referral-slug})

Target Slug

The destination slug on your profile (proangler.com/{handle}/{target-slug})

Pass-Through Mode

Skip the profile page and send followers directly to a URL

Anchor Redirect

Send followers to a specific plugin section on your profile page

Expiration Date

Optional date after which the link falls back to your profile page

Recommendation Engine

Turn on/off the recommendation engine on the product page.

Select Products

Select up to 3 products to attach to the referral link.

Status

Active or inactive. Inactive links do not redirect

Redirect Modes

Every referral operates in one of four modes depending on how it's configured.

Standard Slug Redirect

The default mode. Followers are routed through the referral system and land on your product page.

    r4n.me/{handle}/{slug}  →  proangler.com/{handle}/{target-slug}

Traffic is logged and referral context is carried forward. Enabling product page attribution and Angler Points rewards.

Anchor Target / Redirect

When Anchor Redirect is enabled, followers are sent directly to a specific plugin section on a profile page instead of a product page. Select the target plugin section from the dropdown. The referral system handles the rest.

    r4n.me/{handle}/{slug}  →  proangler.com/{handle}#{plugin-section}

Example: Toyota wants to drive traffic to their event waitlist plugin on their profile:

    r4n.me/toyota/events → proangler.com/toyota#waitList

The browser scrolls directly to the waitlist section on page load.

Pass-Through: Internal

When Pass-Through mode is set to Internal, followers skip your profile entirely and are sent to any page within ProAngler.

r4n.me/{handle}/{slug} → proangler.com/auth/signup

r4n.me/{handle}/{slug} → proangler.com/toyota

Attribution codes (see below) are appended automatically on internal redirects.

Pass-Through: External

When Pass-Through mode is set to External, followers skip your profile and are sent to an external website. Use this for affiliate links, brand landing pages, or campaign URLs.

    r4n.me/{handle}/{slug} → https://tacklewarehouse.com/product-page?code=TheDude

Attribution codes are not appended to external URLs. Angler Points are not earned through external pass-through redirects.

🌟 Attribution 🌟

Any referral link can accept a ?c= query parameter with a ProAngler handle. This attributes the traffic to that specific creator without creating separate referral records.

r4n.me/toyota/eventslist → organic traffic

r4n.me/toyota/eventslist?c=TheDude → attributed to @TheDude

r4n.me/toyota/eventslist?c=BillyBob → attributed to @BillyBob

All three links use a single referral record. Toyota gives each content creator the same base URL and asks them to append their own handle. Every hit is logged with the attribution code, giving Toyota a per-creator breakdown from one link.

The attribution code (?c=) is forwarded to the final destination:

    proangler.com/toyota?code=TheDude#eventslist

Attribution requires a ProAngler account. This is by design. This creates a platform incentive for partners and content creators to join and keeps attribution tied to verified identities.

Expiration Dates

Set an optional expiration date on any referral. After that date:

  • The referral link still works. Followers are not shown an error.

  • Traffic is redirected to your profile page instead of the original destination

  • The click is still logged

This is useful for limited-time campaigns, event registrations, or seasonal promotions. No need to manually deactivate the link when the campaign ends.

Connecting Products to a Referral

Products from your catalog can be connected to a referral's target slug. When a follower arrives on your product page through a referral link, the full referral context (source, attribution, slug) is carried through.

To connect a product:

  • Make sure you've built some products =)

  • From the Referral editor, select up to 3 products under Add Products to Target Slug

  • Or from the Product editor, add a referral slug under Referral Slugs

Both approaches link the product to the same referral target. Free plan members can connect up to 3 products per referral.

Active vs. Inactive

Each referral has an active / inactive toggle.

  • Active — the link redirects normally

  • Inactive — the link does not redirect. Followers receive a not-found response

Free plan members can have up to 5 active referrals at a time. Deactivating referrals you're not currently using frees up active slots.

The Default Referral

Every account includes a default referral with an empty slug:

r4n.me/{your-handle}

This link routes to your ProAngler profile. It cannot be deleted or modified. Use it as your general short link when you want to send followers to your profile without a specific destination.
